What is Tech Boot Camp?

Tech Boot Camp is 2 weeks (full-time Monday to Friday) of activities to help local young people start a career in the games industry. The boot camp takes places within a real games company in Warwickshire. Participants are given introductory training on how to program using actual games industry software tools, such as Unity 3D. Participants produce their own code and demos, and get to showcase their work and skills to local gaming companies who are looking to hire and grow new talent via apprenticeships.

Is there a cost to attend?

There is no cost to participants. Tech Boot Camp is funded by Warwickshire County Council in support of skills and the local economy.

How many places are available?

Places are limited to 9 participants. Places will be offered to those participants who best demonstrate their suitability and potential via an application process.

What is the eligibility criteria to apply?

You need to be 16 to 24 years of age.

You need to be able to demonstrate a passion for video gaming, plus an interest and aptitude for coding.

Prior qualifications are not necessary, but exam results may be taken into consideration when selecting participants.

Upon completion of the boot camp you should be willing to consider undertaking an apprenticeship with a games company in the Warwickshire area – the aim is to match talented young people who want to work in games development with companies who want to hire.

Where does the boot camp take place? Is there help with travel costs?

The boot camp takes place at the premises of games development company You42 in the centre of Leamington Spa. Participants will receive a subsistence allowance to help with travel costs, lunches etc.

What is the application process?

All applicants need to apply online before the closing date of the 23 July 2017. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to an interview/assessment. Successful candidates will be notified by the 31st July 2017.

Are other dates available for future Tech Boot Camps?

Future dates are not currently confirmed.

Who runs Tech Boot Camp?

Tech Boot Camp is a partnership between Warwickshire County Council, JBC Skills Training – a specialist provider of technical training & apprenticeships, and games industry employers like You42.
